Commercial Analyst

Location:

New York, US

ABOUT US:

Alter Domus, the strategic partner that unleashes growth in private markets through expertise, powered by data and technology, administers $3.9 trillion in assets on behalf of clients across private equity, private debt, real estate and infrastructure, placing it among the largest fund administrators serving the alternative investment industry.

With over 7,000 colleagues across 23 jurisdictions, the firm combines global reach with deep sector expertise and proprietary technology to help clients scale with confidence in an increasingly complex private markets landscape. Founded in 2003, the firm brings more than two decades of specialist experience to one of the fastest-growing segments of the global financial industry — a market on course to nearly double in size over the next five years.

THE ROLE:

This is a programme with a defined destination. You will join a small cohort of Analysts & Associates in New York, begin building your knowledge of the alternative investment industry, and work alongside senior sales professionals on live commercial opportunities. The value of that is apprenticeship: you will develop an understanding of how origination actually works, and how a sales process is run end to end — from first contact to signature — guided by people who do it every day. It is a skill set that is very hard to get access to at this stage of a career.

We are being specific about that because it shapes how the programme is structured and the learnings that come from that.

  • Your first eight weeks are foundational training — fund structures, the NAV and capital call cycle, private credit and real assets mechanics, and how a fund CFO actually evaluates an administrator.
  • From month three you are introduced to live conversations in your senior sales partner's coverage area — learning to research the accounts, observing and supporting the outreach, and sitting in the meetings where the conversations happen that follow.
  • As you progress and build confidence, you will begin to take on more of the process yourself — developing accountability in our commercial organisation; contributing to campaigns end to end, learning how to run the advance meeting programme for a major conference, and beginning to support your senior sales partner through discovery, scoping and proposal.
  • There are formal reviews at regular intervals throughout the programme, and you will always know where you stand and how you are performing against objectives.

What you will be doing

In-Depth Research

  • Begin to produce written account briefs on prospective clients: fund family and vintage history, strategy, assets under management, current fundraising status, incumbent service providers, key finance and operations personnel, and recent market events.
  • Support the production of support packs on live opportunities ahead of client meetings, pitches and RFP responses.
  • Monitor market data and regulatory sources — Preqin, PitchBook, With Intelligence, SEC filings and the trade press — to develop your ability to identify new fund launches, mandates and changes in service provider relationships.
  • Learn to track and report on trends in your coverage area, including new fund launches and competitor activity, and contribute a written point of view to the commercial team each quarter.

Technology and AI Enablement

  • Be introduced to a best-in-class commercial technology stack — Salesforce, Outreach, Preqin — and develop the habit of using it deliberately rather than incidentally.
  • Learn to apply our approved AI tools across your day-to-day work: account research, first-draft briefs, list building, meeting preparation and follow-up, so your time goes into judgement to deliver outcomes rather than assembly.
  • Start to build AI into your own workflow — prompt well, check every output against primary sources, and never send work that you have not verified.
  • Observe and contribute to the standard for how the commercial team uses these tools, and share what works with the wider cohort so everyone learns together.
  • Leverage AI in everything you do — grow into our Commercial Champions and Evangelists.

Supporting the Senior Sales Team

  • Assist in researching and learning to prioritise prospective clients across your senior sales partner's coverage area, so their outreach starts with the right accounts and a real reason for them to call.
  • Build the raw material for that outreach — drafted messaging, call notes and talking points anchored on real market events — then track responses, flag warm signals and help secure first meetings, which you attend.

Developing your partner network

  • Start to build your own network of peers at the firms that sit alongside our clients — law firms, audit and accounting firms, tax advisers, consultants and placement agents.  Be an ambassador for Alter Domus.
  • Track where those relationships intersect with your coverage area, and identify referral and co-introduction opportunities from them.
  • Attend industry and professional networking events, and maintain the contacts you make there. Keep your network alive and ever green.
  • Represent Alter Domus credibly in those conversations, and build your own professional profile and brand alongside it — including a considered presence on LinkedIn with your own voice, championing that of the company.
  • Log partner contacts and referral activity in Salesforce so the network is visible to the wider commercial team.  Update real time for data accuracy.

Campaign Execution

  • Assist in building and validating target lists for defined sales campaigns.
  • Learn to support the execution of campaign outreach and begin to track penetration, response and meeting conversion.
  • Contribute to a written readout at the close of each campaign: what worked, in which segment, and what to do next. Develop the ability to use data to be a compelling storyteller and lift themes that are impactful.
  • Work towards taking ownership of a campaign end to end as you progress.

Conferences and Events

  • Learn to map and prioritise attendee lists for industry conferences and identify where we already have relationships to maximize time and value.
  • Support the outreach that secures meetings in advance of each event and contribute to a written brief to the attending team.
  • Attend priority events and develop your approach to follow-up, being methodical and organized.

What We Are Looking For

Essential

  • A recent graduate or someone early in their career — prior experience in a related role is beneficial.
  • A drive to succeed — someone who is motivated, proactive and eager to learn. Clear, confident written and verbal communication. You will be developing the ability to produce research that senior people rely on and can trust.
  • A people person — someone who enjoys beginning to build relationships at all levels of the company and externally.
  • A curiosity about financial markets, and specifically private capital. You should be able to tell us why this industry rather than another and have a point of view that is unique to you.
  • An eagerness to develop analytical instincts and a willingness to grow comfortable with detail. Much of this role is learning to find a signal in public filings and market data that other people have missed.
  • Resilience and self-direction. Outbound origination involves a lot of no's, and the people who do well treat that as information rather than rejection.
  • Organised, and beginning to develop the ability to hold several workstreams with competing demands at once, against deadlines.
  • Competency with Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
  • Comfortable with technology, and genuinely curious about applying AI tools to commercial work.
  • An ambition for a career in commercial & sales. Passionate about winning new business and being part of a commercial team that is in growth mode. This is a sales programme, and the company is in scale-up mode. We would rather you knew that clearly at the start and be fully engaged for the journey ahead!

Helpful, but not required

  • Any exposure to CRM systems, Salesforce and Outreach in particular.
  • Any prior exposure to private equity, private credit, real estate or infrastructure — through study, an internship, or a student investment fund.
  • A second language.

Base salary range: $70,000 - $80,000 per year.
