Your role:

The Senior Disaster Recovery Engineer owns the organization’s ability to recover its critical IT services when things go wrong. You will design, maintain and rigorously test the recovery plans and capabilities that protect key applications, databases and infrastructure — across on-premises, cloud and hybrid environments — so services can be restored within agreed recovery time and recovery point objectives (RTO/RPO). The role combines hands-on engineering with coordination across many teams: you will run the DR testing program, act as technical recovery lead during real events, and provide the evidence that shows auditors, regulators and management the organization can genuinely recover — not just on paper.

Your responsibilities:

–  Recovery planning — design, document and maintain DR strategies, recovery plans and runbooks for critical applications, databases and infrastructure; define and periodically revalidate RTOs and RPOs with service owners.

–  Resilience by design — embed recovery requirements into the design of new systems and into change and release processes; contribute to business impact analyses and the service-tiering model that drives recovery priorities.

–  DR testing — plan and run an annual program of tabletop exercises, component restores and partial or full failover tests; document results against RTO/RPO targets and track remediation actions to closure.

–  Incident response — act as technical recovery lead during major incidents and declared disasters; participate in the on-call rotation; run post-incident and post-test reviews and feed lessons learned back into plans.

–  Monitoring and reporting — keep DR readiness visible through monitoring and dashboards; produce management reporting on recovery posture, test coverage and open risks.

–  Governance and audit — maintain DR documentation to audit standard and provide evidence for audits and regulatory reviews (e.g., ISO 22301, DORA where applicable); keep IT DR aligned with business continuity plans.

–  Automation and improvement — automate recovery procedures and validation checks through scripting; evaluate emerging DR tooling and practices; manage day-to-day relationships with DR-related vendors.

Your skills:

–  Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or IT, or equivalent practical experience.

–  5+ years in IT infrastructure or operations, including 3+ years with dedicated disaster recovery responsibility in an enterprise environment.

–  A track record of designing and executing successful DR tests — and ideally real recoveries — against defined RTO/RPO targets.

–  Solid grasp of recovery fundamentals: RTO/RPO-driven design, backup and replication principles, and recovery of virtualized estates (e.g., VMware, Hyper-V) running Windows Server and Linux.

–  Recovery experience with at least one enterprise database platform (e.g., SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL).

–  Working knowledge of cloud and hybrid DR patterns on a major public cloud, and of networking factors that affect failover (DNS, load balancing, firewalls).

–  Scripting ability in PowerShell, Python or Bash; familiarity with frameworks such as ISO 22301, NIST SP 800-34 and ITIL.

–  Excellent documentation skills — runbooks a stranger could follow at 3 a.m. — and clear communication with technical and non-technical audiences.

Preferred

–  Experience in a regulated industry and familiarity with operational-resilience regulation (e.g., DORA, NIS2); comfortable presenting evidence to auditors or executives.

–  Experience with DR orchestration tooling, non-disruptive DR testing, or business continuity management program.

–  Certifications valued: CBCP/ABCP, MBCI/CBCI, EDRP, ISO 22301 Lead Implementer, cloud or major vendor certifications, ITIL.

Participation in  on-call rotation and out-of-hours availability during declared recovery events; planned evening or weekend windows for scheduled DR tests (compensated per company policy); occasional travel to data centers or recovery sites.
