Your role :
We are seeking an experienced, hands-on Senior API Engineer to design, build, and operate APIs and the underlying platform infrastructure at Alter Domus. You will work at the intersection of software engineering and platform operations — building well-crafted, production-grade APIs while ensuring they run reliably at scale on Kubernetes.
This is a senior individual contributor role with a clear growth path into Solution Design. We are looking for someone who thinks architecturally, takes pride in building foundational systems that others build upon, and is ready to grow into broader technical leadership over time.
Your responsibilities:
API Development & Standards
-
Design and develop production-grade APIs using Python and FastAPI, following RESTful principles and OpenAPI specifications
-
Build foundational platform APIs (tenant management, user APIs) that serve as building blocks for the wider organisation
-
Establish and maintain API standards across the organisation — versioning strategies, error handling patterns, authentication flows, and documentation practices
-
Design APIs with an architectural mindset — considering how they will evolve, scale, and be consumed by multiple teams over time
-
Review API designs and implementations, providing technical guidance and mentoring to ensure adherence to platform standards
-
Build shared libraries and tooling that help other teams deliver consistent, high-quality APIs
Platform & Infrastructure
-
Build and maintain Kubernetes infrastructure — deploying, scaling, and operating your own services including deployments, services, ingress, and observability
-
Deploy and configure APIs onto Kong API Gateway — defining routes, applying plugins, and managing authentication policies for your services
-
Create and optimise CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps) for automated testing, building, and deploying APIs
-
Implement infrastructure-as-code practices using Helm; Terraform experience is a plus
Operations & Collaboration
-
Monitor platform health and proactively address performance and reliability issues
-
Work cross-functionally with development, security, and operations teams to align platform capabilities with business needs
-
Troubleshoot complex issues spanning application code, infrastructure, and networking layers
-
Contribute to architectural discussions and solution design — this role is intended to grow into broader solution design responsibilities over time
Your skills:
Must Have
-
5+ years experience developing APIs in Python, with strong hands-on FastAPI experience in production environments
-
Strong understanding of API design principles — REST conventions, OpenAPI/Swagger, versioning, error handling, pagination, and multi-tenant patterns
-
CKAD (Certified Kubernetes Application Developer) certification required
-
Solid production experience with Kubernetes — deployments, services, ingress, networking, troubleshooting, autoscaling
-
Experience with event-driven architectures and messaging systems (e.g. EventBridge, SQS, SNS, Azure Service Bus, Kafka)
-
Experience building CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions or Azure DevOps)
-
Familiarity with Docker and Helm
-
Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and architectural thinking
-
Fluent in English
Nice to Have
-
AWS or cloud platform experience (EKS, Lambda, S3, IAM) — plus
-
GraphQL experience — strong plus; directly relevant to our platform API layer
-
Terraform basics — enough to provision supporting resources for your APIs (databases, caches, queues) without depending on an ops team
-
Experience with API gateway platforms — Kong, AWS API Gateway, or Azure APIM
-
Background in platform engineering or developer experience roles
-
Experience establishing API governance practices across an organisation
Mindset
We are looking for someone who:
-
Enjoys building APIs that others build upon — the foundational services that become critical infrastructure for the organisation
-
Takes pride in designing clean, well-documented interfaces that make other developers' lives easier
-
Thinks architecturally — beyond the immediate use case, considering how a system will evolve, scale, and be maintained as adoption grows
-
Wants to grow into solution design and technical leadership — not just delivering tasks, but shaping how the platform develops over time
-
Is energised by enabling others rather than just shipping features for end users
-
Is comfortable owning problems end to end — from API contract design through to production observability
